Today in U.S. History: On May 28, 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, authorizing the removal of tens of thousands of native Americans from their ancestral lands to government established reservations. The forced removal of the Cherokee people, who unsuccessfully resisted the Act, is remembered today as the Trail of Tears. 20,000 Cherokee were forced at gunpoint to march hundreds of miles to their designated resettlement area west of the Mississippi. About a quarter of them perished during the brutal forced march. (fb)

Today in U.S. History: On May 27, 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to pedestrian traffic with great fanfare and celebration. In the words of 𝑆𝑎𝑛 𝐹𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑜 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑙𝑒 reporter Wills O'Brien in a piece the following day: "A necklace of surpassing beauty was placed about the lovely throat of San Francisco yesterday." The bridge was opened to vehicular traffic the following day, but on Pedestrian Day, as it was so dubbed, the brand new gleaming steel ribbon spanning the bay hosted foot-traffic by the thousands. https://youtu.be/sow_vHGdMXo (fb)
