Last time on Advocacy 101, PFLAG National’s VP of Advocacy, Katie Blair (she/her) talked us through how to set up an in-person meeting with your local lawmaker. Now that our meeting is booked, let’s prepare our agenda: • Decide what you’d like to discuss specifically, and have a goal in mind. • Educate yourself on that topic, and prepare one or two powerful talking points. • Share a personal story about how this issue you’re discussing will impact you or your family. • Plan a specific ask, such as, “Please vote yes on the policy that would keep LGBTQ+ stories on the shelves in our local libraries.” After your meeting concludes, be sure to follow up with a thank you note for their time, and definitely write them back if they take the action you wanted them to take.
