NEIO’s COVID EFFORTS NEIO’s Covid efforts are presently focused in the Helambu region, where we have been helping schools for the past 13 years and have working relationships with the Rural Municipal Office and communities. Working with NEIO’s Nepal President has enabled us to make and execute our plan with speed. We have delivered: · three oxygen concentrators to two Rural Municipal hospitals · 1,000 prevention supplies (including masks and hand sanitizers) Funds spent to date are USD10000, and we can use your help to fund these efforts and future spending. We have also started planning efforts in Nuwakot region, where we have been helping schools in the same province. COVID CRISIS IN NEPAL Nepal is severely hit recently by the same Covid 19 outbreak that is raging in neighboring India. The variant identified in India is believed to be more contagious, and a mutation (called K417N) of that variant is now found in Nepal. Below are some data we gathered, but it is believed a lot of cases might not have been reported: - Highest-ever numbers of cases in May: between 8,000 and 9,000 a day. - More than 580,000 Nepalis have been infected. - More than 7,700 deaths have been reported. - Barely 3% of Nepalis are fully vaccinated, and despite vaccine donations, Nepal is suffering from a severe vaccine shortage. - Government hospitals in Kathmandu are almost all occupied. - Private hospitals are too expensive for most Nepalis (it can cost USD5,000 for treatments, but one-third of Nepalis live near poverty line, which, according to World Bank, means living on less than USD1.9 a day). - In rural Nepal, the healthcare ratio is one doctor for every 150,000 people.
