ASSIST
ASSIST is a nonprofit organization based in the United States, specifically designed to facilitate educational and cultural exchanges for international students. Founded in 1969, ASSIST operates as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity and is recognized as an authorized Exchange Visitor Program by the U.S. State Department.
Mission
The primary mission of ASSIST is to create life-changing opportunities for exceptional international scholars, enabling them to learn from and contribute to some of the finest independent secondary schools in the United States. The organization emphasizes the importance of cultural understanding and global citizenship, aiming to develop future leaders who are capable of addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.
History
ASSIST was founded by Paul G. Sanderson, Jr. in 1969, with the goal of enriching the American educational landscape by introducing international students into independent secondary schools. Originally starting with a small group of students from Germany, the organization has since expanded significantly and now includes scholars from over 52 countries. The leadership of ASSIST has evolved over the years, with notable figures including Kenneth and Betsy Lindfors, and more recently, Martin Milne, who currently serves as President.
Scholar Selection and Program Structure
ASSIST matches high-achieving students aged 14 to 18 with U.S. private secondary schools, providing them with scholarships to cover tuition, room, and board. Each year, the organization selects scholars based on their academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, and personal qualities. In its most recent selection cycle, ASSIST reviewed over 1,000 applications, inviting finalists for interviews and ultimately accepting a competitive cohort of scholars.
The selected students participate in a year-long program where they engage deeply with their host schools and local communities, enriching their educational experiences while also sharing their unique cultural perspectives.
Impact and Alumni
Since its inception, ASSIST has supported over 6,100 students, many of whom have gone on to attend prestigious universities globally and have successful careers in various fields. The organization prides itself on fostering a robust network of alumni who are active in advocating for global cooperation and understanding.
Conclusion
ASSIST continues to be a significant player in the field of international education and cultural exchange, committed to the ideals of global citizenship and partnership. Through its programs, it aims to build bridges across cultures and empower a new generation of leaders equipped to make positive contributions to society.
