Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.
Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. (BSMA) is a private nonprofit organization in the United States dedicated to providing support for mothers who have sons or daughters in active service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The organization was originally formed during World War II.
History
On January 22, 1942, the Flint News Advertiser printed a coupon asking mothers of servicemen to return it after filling it out. Following a significant response, on February 1, 1942, 300 mothers met in the Durant Hotel in Flint, Michigan, to establish a permanent organization. Captain George H. Maines chaired this first meeting. By February 6, 1942, the organization was reported in the Congressional record. Chapters were initially formed in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon, California, Iowa, and Washington. The organization was officially chartered by Congress in June 1960[1][5].
Mission and Activities
The Blue Star Mothers of America is committed to several purposes, including perpetuating the memory of those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, fostering patriotism, providing educational and social support, and assisting in veterans' ceremonies. They also aim to support unsupported mothers who have children in service and promote community civilian defense[1][5]. The organization supports troops through various activities such as sending care packages, participating in Welcome Homes, Honor Flights, and collaborating with organizations like the USO and Red Cross[1].
Membership
Membership is open to mothers and stepmothers who have children serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or who have been honorably discharged. Since 2011, grandmothers, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians are also eligible. The organization welcomes members from diverse family structures and backgrounds, including those living outside the U.S.[2]. Associate members include other family members, spouses, and friends of service members, who do not pay dues and cannot vote[2].
Structure and Chapters
Blue Star Mothers operates through local chapters across the U.S., which are organized into state departments in some regions. A minimum of five eligible mothers is required to start a new chapter. The organization does not have a fixed headquarters, as its national leadership moves with the current president[2].
Impact and Growth
During World War II, the organization had approximately 30,000 members. Membership grew significantly over the years, reaching about 7,500 members by 2014, with nearly 6,000 members reported in later years across over 200 chapters[2][4]. The organization plays a vital role in supporting families of service members and promoting national pride.
