Out of 30,123 PA program applicants in a recent CASPA application cycle, just 0.21% self-identified as a gender minority. While gender minority applicants had a similar likelihood of matriculating as their peers, this proportion is significantly lower than national population estimates (0.7%-2.0%), raising questions about visibility, safety, and access in PA education. It’s not just about opening doors. It’s about making sure applicants feel safe and supported enough to walk through them. PAs who identify as LGBTQIA+ may be more attuned to health disparities of gender minority patients, leading to the best possible care for every patient.
