Printed Matter is the world's largest non-profit organization dedicated to publications by artists. Our store front has over 15,000 artist books for viewing and purchase! Printed Matter, Inc. is an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to foster the appreciation, dissemination and understanding of artists' publications. Printed Matter was founded in 1976 by artists and art-workers who recognized the need for an organization that could draw together publications being produced worldwide by artists that had no means of formal distribution. Specifically, Printed Matter acts as a promotional, educational, and dissemination operation for publications that are conceived by artists as "artwork for the printed page." Our interest is predominately focused on books that do not simply reproduce preexisting artwork, such as drawings or sculptures, but rather consider the space formed within a book as a unique artistic medium. Printed Matters represents largely artists whose books are self-published in editions of 100 copies or greater.
