In addition to the announcements about bringing on brand-new entry-level police officers from various academies (that will take many months to become officers that can work on their own), the Police Department continues to lose officers to retirements and resignations. This past January, Officer Machado resigned to take a job as a law enforcement officer in a neighboring agency in Solano County. We wish him well and thank him for his service to the citizens of Vallejo. Unfortunately, the City of Vallejo is still not a competitive agency as it relates to benefits and working conditions as evident by the continuous loss of officers who are not interested in continuing to work here. This will continue to be a problem until the City Council and City Leadership makes public stay a priority. �We had been working on a recruitment and retention bonus to help with staffing but the City refuses to communicate in a timely fashion. The last we heard from them was in November of 2024. They obviously do not have a real interest in making Vallejo attractive to police officers and appear to prefer trying to pay the Sheriff or begging the CHP to help. It is not safe for our members and not safe of the public. We are currently working at a little over 50 percent of budgeted staffing. (fb)
