HOPOS is very pleased to announce the election of a new Vice-President: Francesca Biagioli, Università degli studi di Torino. We offer our congratulations to our colleague on their election. Francesca Biagioli will serve as Vice-President of HOPOS from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026. HOPOS is also very pleased to announce the election of two new Steering Committee members: Paola Cantù, Université Aix-Marseille, and Bennett McNulty, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. We offer our congratulations to our colleagues on their election. Paola Cantù and Bennett McNulty will serve on the HOPOS Steering Committee from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2027. On behalf of HOPOS, we offer our profound thanks and appreciation to all of the candidates who ran for election to a HOPOS office in 2024. The continuing success of HOPOS depends on the engagement and energy of those who are willing to run for such positions, and we hope you will run again in the future. Finally, we thank the HOPOS members who took the time to vote, and to help to determine the direction of our Society. The 2024 HOPOS Election was overseen by the HOPOS Nominations and Elections Committee, who deserve special tanks. The Nominating and Elections Committee consists of Sander Verhaegh, Angela Axworthy, and K. Brad Wray. The election opened on October 1, 2024, and closed at 10.30 p.m. on October 31, 2024. HOPOS members were solicited to vote via email at the opening of the election, with reminders sent to those who had not voted two weeks and a day before the close of the election. If you are a Full Member of HOPOS with dues paid in full, and you encountered problems in voting, or if you have any other comments, questions, or concerns about the 2024 HOPOS Election, please write to Sander Verhaegh (A.A.Verhaegh@tilburguniversity.edu). Announcing the HOPOS Endowment Campaign! For the first time in its 30-year history, HOPOS is embarking on a fund raising drive. For many of us, HOPOS has been our intellectual home, a place where we can meet and converse with like-minded scholars. HOPOS has had great successes, a string of biennial conferences going back to 1996, and publishing our own journal with University of Chicago Press. HOPOS has now begun a fund-raising campaign in order to create an endowment that will generate earnings, thereby giving HOPOS a great deal of stability and allow it to do more of what it is already doing (support the journal, partially subsidize conferences, offer partial travel grants to supplement the NSF, etc.) as well as allowing HOPOS to take on new initiatives (a book prize or other awards, for example). We have supported student and independent scholar travel to conferences, supported the journal, and given free memberships to global south scholars, but we can do more. Please consider donating to the endowment campaign. Donating can be done on-line through the journal website. Simply go to https://subfill.uchicago.edu/JournalPubs/Donation.aspx?webpub=hop and follow the instructions. It is also possible to donate by check (USA checks only). The mailing address is Paul Franco, HOPOS Treasurer; Department of Philosophy; University of Washington; Savery Hall, Room 361, Box 353350; Seattle, WA 98195-3350. Finally, it is possible to give stock or other equites directly to HOPOS’ new brokerage account. At least in the USA, this is highly tax advantaged. You receive a tax deduction for the full current value of the equity, HOPOS gets the full current value, and no one pays capital gains taxes. This is particularly attractive to donors who may have stocks or mutual funds that they have held a long time and that have significantly gained in value. Contact Paul Franco, HOPOS Treasurer, pfranco@uw.edu, in order to set up a transfer. Thank you very much for your consideration. With your help, HOPOS can flourish for another 30 years and support new generations of scholars. Please give generously. (fb)
