Last night, PennEnvironment was at the community meeting about the chromium contamination in Southwest Philly by treasured green space Bartram's Garden. The landowner, ​Alliance 51st Street, pledged additional transparency following community pressure, but the remediation plan is still contingent on them finding someone who wants to build on the site. Southwest Philly - and everyone who loves and visits Bartram's - deserves better, and for the toxic soil on the site to be capped ASAP. Just a few miles from the state capital, The Nature Conservancy in Pennsylvania and the Audubon Mid-Atlantic have worked together to acquire new land for conservation that expands habitat for one of the United State’s fastest declining migratory birds, the cerulean warbler. This extraordinary bird flies all the way from the Andes every spring, but when it finally gets here to Pennsylvania, it needs not only a unique type of oak forest found here in the capital region, it needs it connected to health cerulean warbler populations already thriving in Perry and Cumberland County. Because of these efforts to connect oak forests in the area, the population in the area is expanding and international experts have declared this warbler a success story.
