Erie Drum Corps Association

The Erie Drum Corps Association, associated with the nonprofit entity linked to the EIN 263519726, is an organization that supports the activities of the Erie Thunderbirds Drum and Bugle Corps. The Erie Thunderbirds have a rich history, originally formed in Meadville, Pennsylvania, in 1956 as a parade corps. In 1968, they merged with members of the Shoreliners Drum and Bugle Corps from North East, Pennsylvania, to form the Erie Thunderbirds.

History of the Erie Thunderbirds

The Thunderbirds quickly gained prominence, winning several championships under American Legion and RCA competitions. They achieved notable placements in the DCA Senior Championships, including 8th place in both 1976 and 1979. However, due to funding issues, the corps disbanded in 1984.

In the spring of 1991, former Thunderbirds members, along with other regional corps alumni, re-established the Erie Thunderbirds Drum and Bugle Corps. By 1993, the corps returned to competition, initially participating in the DCA Mini Corps Championship, which they won consecutively for four years. They resumed field competitions, achieving success in 1998 and 2002.

Modern Activities

In recent years, the Erie Thunderbirds have continued to perform at local and regional events, including parades and drum corps competitions. They have also participated in national events, such as the Drum Corps Association (DCA) Championships.

In 2014, the corps reorganized with a focus on competitive performances, participating successfully in the SDCA Eastern Midwest circuit. In 2015, they were approved to compete as a field corps in the DCA World Championships for the first time in over 30 years. Since then, they have marked significant milestones, including achieving second place in Class A at the 2016 DCA Finals.

Financial Challenges

Like many drum corps, the Erie Thunderbirds have faced challenges, including financial constraints and membership fluctuations. However, the organization remains committed to preserving the drum corps tradition in the Erie area.

Legacy

The organization's efforts have not only contributed to the cultural landscape of Northwestern Pennsylvania but have also provided a platform for musical and performance development for local youth and adults alike. Despite the challenges, the Erie Drum Corps Association continues to be an integral part of the community's artistic heritage.

2020 Season Alumni and Friends After many meetings and much contemplation we have made the decision not to field a competitive corps this year. The corps has struggled this past winter recruiting and retaining members and there is no indication we will reach the minimum membership established by DCA. This has been a difficult decision. The Thunderbirds Drum Bugle Corps was founded in Meadville PA in 1956 and has a long and decorated history.
