Questers Inc
Questers Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and education about historical artifacts, memorials, buildings, and landmarks. The organization was founded in 1944 by Jessie Elizabeth Bardens, with the first meeting held on April 6, 1944, in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. Initially, the group focused on the study and collection of antiques, which sparked curiosity and enthusiasm among its members.
Mission
The mission of Questers Inc is to educate its members and the public about places, objects, or events of historical significance. This is achieved through the preservation and restoration of historical sites and artifacts, as well as educational programs and activities.
Structure and Activities
Questers Inc is structured into local chapters, which are organized under state/provincial and international levels. Members participate in monthly chapter meetings, typically from September through May, where they engage in educational programs highlighting historical collections, stories, or sites. State and provincial meetings are held twice annually, focusing on broader historical themes, while an annual international convention takes place in the spring. This convention includes tours of historical sites, lectures, and business meetings.
Grants and Scholarships
Questers Inc offers preservation and restoration grants at both the international and state/provincial levels. Additionally, the organization provides historical education grants internationally. It also supports educational endeavors through scholarships; for instance, a two-year scholarship is awarded to a student at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and a three-year fellowship is awarded to a student enrolled in the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation.
Membership and Values
A typical Quester is described as a curious, enthusiastic, and imaginative individual with a passion for historical sites and artifacts. Membership is open to anyone interested in these areas, without discrimination based on sex, race, or creed. Questers value lifelong learning and the camaraderie of like-minded individuals, encapsulated in their motto: "It's Fun to Search and a Joy to Find."
Financial Overview
Questers Inc generates most of its revenue from program services, with a significant portion also coming from investment income. Contributions are minimal, reflecting the organization's emphasis on service programs and internal funding. Executive compensation and professional fundraising fees are reported as zero, highlighting the organization's volunteer-driven structure.
International Reach
Questers Inc expanded to become an international organization in 1991, with chapters in both the United States and Canada. The organization has chapters in 43 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. Members pay international dues, which support activities such as newsletter publications, administrative costs, and preservation projects.
