NAMI of Seneca, Sandusky, and Wyandot Counties
NAMI of Seneca, Sandusky, and Wyandot Counties is a United States-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates as an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Founded in 1988, the organization initially began as a grassroots group known as the Alliance for the Mentally Ill (AMI), offering support to families of individuals diagnosed with mental health conditions.
History
The first organized meetings of NAMI SSW were held at Fremont Memorial Hospital (now ProMedica Memorial Hospital) and were facilitated by representatives from local healthcare institutions. The organization expanded over the years, establishing monthly support groups across Fremont, Tiffin, and Upper Sandusky. In 1997, the group filed incorporation papers and was officially recognized as the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Seneca, Sandusky, and Wyandot Counties. Following the national NAMI rebranding, it became known as NAMI SSW in 1999.
Mission and Activities
NAMI SSW is dedicated to educating, advocating for, and supporting individuals, families, and caregivers affected by mental health conditions or brain disorders. The organization collaborates with community agencies to enhance mental health services and support systems within the three-county area. Strategic planning initiated in 2002 led to significant growth, including the opening of an office and hiring of staff.
Leadership
NAMI SSW is governed by a Board of Trustees and supported by a team of volunteers and professional staff. It functions with the goal of providing resources, advocacy, and support tailored to local needs.
Impact
Over the years, NAMI SSW has become an integral part of the community, providing essential services and fostering greater understanding of mental health issues. Its efforts have contributed to improved services and increased awareness in Seneca, Sandusky, and Wyandot Counties.
