Initiative for Rural Innovation & Stewardship

Overview

The Initiative for Rural Innovation and Stewardship (IRIS) is a nonprofit organization based in North Central Washington, founded in 2001 by Dr. Kent Mullinix, Director of the Wenatchee Valley College Agriculture Department. The organization aims to foster sustainable rural communities by gathering and sharing success stories that enhance a sense of belonging, inspire action, and build community.

Mission

IRIS's mission is centered on cultivating thriving communities within a healthy environment, believing that these conditions are essential for success. Its vision for North Central Washington is a vibrant community that appreciates historical connections, honors contributions to lasting stewardship, and adapts to change.

Programs and Activities

IRIS operates several key programs to achieve its mission:

  • Success Story Exchange: This program involves gathering stories that highlight local knowledge and successes through interviews, written contributions, and photographic documentation. These stories are then shared through various media platforms and events.
  • NCW Community Success Summit: IRIS hosts an annual summit in different communities across North Central Washington to showcase collaborative success stories and community strength.
  • NCW Collections: A digital archive housing hundreds of stories and materials gathered between 2003 and 2021, providing insights into the region's stewardship and community engagement.

History

Initially established as an educational hub for improving agricultural sustainability, IRIS transitioned to become an independent nonprofit in order to partner effectively with various organizations. By 2005, it was working closely with the Washington Biodiversity Council to explore systems like habitat farming that balance agricultural needs with biodiversity conservation.

Leadership and Structure

The organization is guided by a diverse board and seeks to integrate leadership, networks, and technology to sustain its operations into the future. IRIS values stewardship, inclusiveness, integration, collaboration, and commitment to the future. It expands its impact by engaging a community of board members, partners, staff, and volunteers to advance shared goals and highlight diverse voices.

Impact

Through its efforts, IRIS contributes to maintaining healthy diverse ecosystems, fostering thriving lives, and building community unity. By archiving and sharing success stories, IRIS inspires action and informs decisions about sustainable practices in North Central Washington.

Legacy

IRIS recognizes the importance of storytelling in connecting people and communities. Over the years, it has collected nearly 600 stories that contribute to understanding the region's natural landscape and human community, shaping core values and practices that enhance community life.
