Historically a doula was often part of the extended family or a respected community member trusted within the community that the expected mother lived. Original Doula was often the pregnant womans mother or grandmother. They understood the needs of the pregnant woman often through their own personal experience or through the tribal rites of passage birth prayers rituals songs special foods and dance.
