United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (USJCC)

The United States Junior Chamber of Commerce, commonly referred to as the Jaycees, is a leadership training service organization and civic organization for young people between the ages of 18 and 40. It is a branch of Junior Chamber International (JCI), focusing on personal and leadership development, community service, business skills enhancement, and international connections.

History

The foundation of the Jaycees can be traced back to 1910 in St. Louis, Missouri, where Henry "Hy" Giessenbier and friends formed the Herculaneum Dance Club. This club evolved into the Young Men's Progressive Civic Association (YMPCA) on October 13, 1915. By 1916, the YMPCA became known as the Junior Citizens, and in 1918, it affiliated with the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce to become the St. Louis Junior Chamber of Commerce[1].

The United States Junior Chamber of Commerce was formally established on January 21, 1920, in St. Louis, Missouri, with Giessenbier as its first national president[2][4]. Initially, the organization aimed to provide young men with opportunities to develop business and leadership skills through community service. Over the years, the USJCC expanded its membership to include women, following a 1984 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allowed states to prohibit sex discrimination in private organizations. Women were officially admitted as full members in 1985[2].

Activities and Programs

The USJCC is renowned for its community service and leadership development projects. Notable programs include the Get Out the Vote campaign, Know America First, Fire Prevention, and the Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA) awards. The organization also played a significant role in supporting aviation development, working alongside Charles A. Lindbergh to develop the U.S. Air Mail Service[1][4].

Membership and Impact

The Jaycees reached their membership peak in 1976 with over 356,000 members. The organization has attracted numerous notable figures, including U.S. presidents, business leaders, and celebrities, highlighting its influence in American society and civic engagement[2].

Legacy

The Jaycees Creed, adopted in 1946, emphasizes faith in God, the brotherhood of man transcending national sovereignty, the importance of economic justice through free enterprise, the rule of law, the value of human personality, and service to humanity[2]. Despite fluctuating membership numbers and organizational changes over the years, the USJCC remains a significant force in community service and leadership development, reflecting the broader mission of Junior Chamber International.
