Large Animal Protection Society, Inc.

Follow Message Edit

The Large Animal Protection Society was formed by nine people because the local SPCA was at the time dealing only with cats and dogs and saw that there was a need for an organization who would be able to investigate and educate large animal complaints. To this day, the board members and humane agents remain on a voluntary basis only and do not receive a salary for their services.

Large Animal Protection Society, Inc.
Overview

The Large Animal Protection Society, Inc. (LAPS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting large animals from cruelty and neglect. Established in 1988, LAPS operates primarily in Chester and Lancaster counties, Pennsylvania.

Mission and Activities

The mission of LAPS is to prevent cruelty to large animals by enforcing Pennsylvania's animal cruelty laws. As a state-chartered, humane agency, LAPS has the authority to investigate complaints of cruelty and neglect involving animals such as horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, goats, llamas, alpacas, and sheep. This authority allows them to intervene in cases where local small-animal organizations may not have the necessary resources or expertise.

LAPS uses state-trained, court-authorized, and badged Humane Society Police Officers to provide these services. In addition to enforcement, LAPS also aims to educate owners on proper animal care, addressing cases of ignorance or neglect. However, when intentional abuse or abandonment is identified, citations may be issued, and animals may be seized by warrant.

Adoption and Rehabilitation

Once animals are rescued, LAPS rehabilitates them and ultimately seeks new, suitable homes through their adoption program. The organization maintains a strict adoption policy, ensuring that animals receive ongoing care and protection throughout their lives.

Funding and Operations

LAPS is an all-volunteer organization, relying on donations to maintain its operations. It receives no funding from local or state government sources and is registered as a 501(c)(3) public charity, making contributions tax-deductible.

Financial Overview

Historically, the organization has reported varying revenues, which have included figures such as $73,100 and $200,000 in different years. Expenses have ranged accordingly, reflecting the costs associated with animal care and legal enforcement. LAPS also holds significant assets, which help support its ongoing mission.

Ratings and Recognition

The Large Animal Protection Society, Inc. has earned a 3-star rating from Charity Navigator, reflecting its financial transparency and efficiency in using donations to advance its mission.
