MLFA stands in support of all students who lawfully exercise their free speech rights during peaceful protests. We stand just as firmly against unlawful attempts to stifle those rights. Peaceful advocacy for Palestine is lawful free speech—and protected by the Constitution. Silencing students or refusing to let them receive the diplomas they’ve already earned punishes them without justification. The school here makes no assertion that this student violated any laws, and doesn’t even put him on notice of any actions of his that violated its policies. Is this really the lesson that schools want to teach their students—that speaking up for human rights comes with punishments from their own school? (fb)
