Association for Special Children and Families Inc

The Association for Special Children and Families Inc (ASCF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families of children with disabilities. Founded in 1978 by a group of dedicated parents, ASCF aims to empower parents by providing them with the tools and resources needed to advocate for their children's educational rights.

Mission and Vision

The mission of ASCF is to empower and support families in raising their children to reach their full potential. Its vision is to ensure that all individuals are included in their communities.

Programs and Services

ASCF offers various programs aimed at:

  • Educating Parents: Providing information on special education rights and advocating techniques.
  • Strengthening Partnerships: Collaborating with professionals and agencies that support children with special needs.
  • Fostering Collaboration: Encouraging effective communication between parents and schools.
  • Resource Provision: Offering resources to families, agencies, and communities.
Highlands Parent Center

ASCF serves as the Highlands Parent Center, a community parent resource center in New Jersey, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The center supports families with children across a range of disabilities by:

  • Strengthening parents’ roles as advocates.
  • Partnering with schools and community agencies to enhance understanding of disabilities and special education.
  • Connecting families with resources and services.
Governance and Recognition

The organization is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of parents and professionals. ASCF has received several awards for its work, including awards from the Learning Disabilities Association of America, SPAN (Statewide Parent Advocacy Network), and the National Parent Alliance.

Funding

ASCF’s parent activities are funded by the Office of Special Education (OSEP) and the Passaic County Department of Human Services, while children’s programs rely on fundraising and community donations.

ASCF continues to play a crucial role in supporting families of children with disabilities, fostering inclusivity and advocating for children's educational rights.
