First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association
The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, now known as FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society founded in 1892 by Anna Hurban and eight other Slovak immigrant women in Cleveland, Ohio. This organization was established at a time when women were significantly underrepresented in leadership roles, but were driven by the need to provide financial protection to families affected by industrial accidents and deaths.
History
The association began with nine members and grew rapidly, reaching 95 members by the end of its first year. By 1899, it had expanded to include 1,859 members across 83 branches. The society officially filed its charter with the Ohio Secretary of State in 1899, allowing it to operate under Ohio’s fraternal code.
In the early years, the organization faced significant challenges, including the Great Depression. However, it persevered and grew, with notable milestones such as the construction of its first home office in 1930 and the merger with the Cleveland Slovak Union in 1945. By the 1940s, the association had amassed $12 million in assets and counted 65,000 members.
Name Change and Rebranding
In the late 1960s, the society changed its name to the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association to avoid confusion with labor unions. More recently, it has been rebranded as FCSLA Life, reflecting its commitment to providing life insurance and financial security while maintaining its Catholic values and Slovak traditions.
Mission and Activities
FCSLA Life is dedicated to offering financial protection through life insurance and annuities. It operates with a strong focus on family, faith, and financial security, reflected in its logo featuring these three core values. The organization supports various community activities and scholarships, and has maintained a strong financial standing with an A- (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best.
Leadership and Milestones
Under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski from 2012 to 2025, FCSLA experienced significant growth, expanding its membership and assets to over $1 billion. During her tenure, the organization increased its footprint by opening new branches and implemented strategic initiatives for long-term sustainability.
FCSLA Life celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017 with a grand ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio. The event highlighted the association's history and its impact on the Slovak-American community.
Philanthropy and Community Engagement
The association is committed to philanthropy and community development. It has established the Anna Hurban Scholarship program and conducted numerous charitable projects throughout the United States. These initiatives underscore its commitment to supporting education and local communities while upholding its Catholic and Slovak heritage.
