Garden State German Shepherd Rescue, Inc.
Overview
Garden State German Shepherd Rescue, Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming German Shepherd Dogs in New Jersey and surrounding areas. Established in 2003, the organization has a long history of saving German Shepherds from shelters and pounds where they often faced euthanasia.
Mission
The mission of Garden State German Shepherd Rescue is to rescue German Shepherd Dogs from shelters and pounds throughout New Jersey. All dogs are assessed for temperament and health before being placed in foster homes.
Operations
- Foster Care: Dogs are placed in volunteer foster homes where they are evaluated, socialized, and cared for until a permanent home is found.
- Adoption Process: Potential adopters must complete an adoption application form, provide references, undergo a phone interview, and a home visit. This ensures the best match between dogs and their new families.
- Volunteer Structure: The organization is entirely volunteer-based, relying on the dedication of volunteers for its operations.
Partnerships and Impact
Garden State German Shepherd Rescue partners with organizations like Best Friends Animal Society to amplify their impact and work towards making communities no-kill. Through these collaborations, the organization benefits from resources such as marketing support, fundraising assistance, and educational events.
Since its inception, Garden State German Shepherd Rescue has successfully rehomed nearly 600 dogs, significantly improving the lives of German Shepherds in New Jersey. By focusing on all age ranges, from puppies to seniors, the organization ensures that no dog is left behind.

Meet Lazlo – A Majestic Long-Haired German Shepherd Looking for His Forever Home! 3 years old-Neutered Lazlo’s current foster mom adores him, but he’s simply too big and strong for her to manage safely so he is up for adoption. Lazlo is a truly stunning long-haired German Shepherd who is officially ready for adoption! He’s a large, powerful dog—comparable in size to a King Shepherd—so please don’t be fooled by the photos. Weighing in at 98 pounds with a solid, classic Eastern European GSD build and huge paws, Lazlo is both impressive and affectionate. He is healthy, neutered, and full of playful, puppy-like energy. While he’s a joy to be around, Lazlo’s strength, agility, and enthusiasm mean he needs an adopter who is physically strong and experienced with large, working-breed dogs. His current foster mom loves him dearly but simply can’t manage his size. Personality & Behavior: Lazlo loves all people and is especially gentle with young children—he doesn't jump up and greets everyone with a happy wag of his tail. He is not a big barker and remains quiet and well-mannered in the home. On leash, he generally ignores other calm dogs and walks well with proper handling. Lazlo is completely housebroken, unbothered by loud noises, and an excellent car companion—he rides quietly and calmly, making road trips a breeze. He would likely thrive with agility training or other structured activities to keep his active mind and body engaged. We are going to say no cats strictly because of his size. We cannot stress this enough: Lazlo is a strong, powerful dog who needs a confident, capable owner to help him reach his full potential. If you have the strength, experience, and love to give this incredible dog the forever home he deserves, please apply at gsgsr.org (See his full story in the post below) (fb)

Happy Mother’s Day! 🌷 Today, we celebrate all the moms — the ones with children, the ones with paws, and the ones who nurture with love, patience, and strength. What is a mom? A mom is someone who gives without asking. She comforts without needing to be told. She shows up, day after day, with open arms and an open heart. A mom can be a person who fosters, who rescues, who loves the forgotten. A mom is love in its purest form — whether she's guiding a child or cuddling a rescue dog through its first safe night. To all of you — biological moms, foster moms, dog moms, and every kind of mom in between — Thank you. You make the world a softer, kinder place. (fb)
