Education in China: The Challenge for ChildrenIn China today, where you are born determines your educational prospects and therefore life opportunities. Affluent urban centers spend up to five times as much educating students on a per capita basis compared to low-income municipalities while early education and foreign language resources are almost unheard of outside of major cities. The impact of this inequality is dramatic: nearly 80% of students from Tier 1 Chinese cities will have the chance to attend college, with only 5% of poor rural students receiving the same opportunity. If education is the key to escaping poverty, then millions of children in China face daunting if not impossible odds.Teach For China: Closing China’s Education Gap Teach For China is enlisting the most promising young leaders from China and the United States to ensure that one day, every child enjoys access to a quality education. We recruit outstanding Chinese and American college graduates and train them to serve as full-time teachers (“Fellows”) in under-resourced Chinese schools. Fellows spend two years working relentlessly in their classrooms to equip students with academic and life skills. They leave their Fellowship not only with invaluable professional and leadership experience but with a deep understanding of and commitment to solving China’s educational challenges. As alumni, they will form a force for change working to create an education system that equips all of China’s children for success.
