June 4, 1894 A year after making her historic journey from Norway to America, 𝘝𝘪𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 is almost wrecked after returning to Chicago from New Orleans. Not by bad weather or high waves, but by a crew made up of seasoned captains who were all accustomed to "issuing orders and there was none to obey." This brings to mind the old Danish proverb, "Too many captains will sink the ship." Nonetheless, the article ends with the happy news that the ship was saved, as "every Captain of the crew was bent on saving the ship or dying in the attempt." (fb)

During those days at sea when there was not enough wind to sail, another activity to keep the 𝘝𝘪𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 crew busy was to fish. Rasmus Rasmussen reported that they "caught such an abundance of fish that we were cleaning fish until midnight and back at it at 4:00 the next morning…Now we had use for our large copper kettle (pictured behind the crew below). It was almost filled with salted fish. Our steward served us fish morning, noon, and night—sometimes cooked, sometimes fried, and fish soup wasn’t lacking, either. But the 'Vikings' soon tired of the all-fish menu, and one declared he would become a Newfoundland cod unless there was an end to the fish food." (fb)
