Polish Women's Alliance of America
Overview

The Polish Women's Alliance of America (PWAA), known in Polish as Związek Polek w Ameryce, is a fraternal benefit society founded on May 22, 1898, in Chicago, Illinois. It was established by Stefania Chmielinska, a pioneering figure in promoting women's rights and Polish culture in the United States.

Founding and Mission

Stefania Chmielinska, a Polish immigrant and seamstress, envisioned an organization that would provide financial security to its members and preserve Polish culture and heritage. During a period when women lacked many rights, including the right to vote and purchase life insurance in their own names, PWAA's establishment was a groundbreaking achievement. It aimed to empower immigrant women by offering them a platform for leadership development, social support, and cultural connection to their homeland.

Achievements and Activities

Over the years, PWAA has been involved in various significant events and causes, including:

  • Support for Poland's Independence: PWAA actively contributed to Poland's struggle for independence following the Partitions of Poland.
  • Madame Curie's Radium Funding: Members participated in fundraising efforts for Madame Maria Sklodowska Curie's experiments.
  • WWII Contributions: They raised funds for a Polish Women's Alliance bomber for the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
  • Polish American Congress: The organization played a key role in the founding and organization of the Polish American Congress in 1944.
  • Cultural and Charitable Activities: PWAA sponsors numerous cultural events, including language lessons, folklore festivals, and supports institutions in Poland and the U.S.
Organization Structure

Local units are known as "Groups," while regional organizations are called "Councils." The organization has historically grown to include tens of thousands of members across the United States.

Modern Developments

In 2017, PWAA merged with FCSLA Life, continuing its mission by offering insurance products, supporting Polish-American causes, and promoting cultural heritage through educational and social programs. Today, it remains one of the largest and most influential Polish women's organizations globally.
