Learn more at www.sa Saving Mothers is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to eradicating preventable maternal deaths among underserved women. Founded and run by medical professionals, our approach to this challenge focuses on: (1) developing low-tech interventions like our safe birth kits which - at a cost of only $15 per kit - can save lives in even the most isolated areas, (2) training all levels of healthcare providers on how to ensure safe deliveries and how to identify and refer for emergencies like postpartum hemorrhage and eclampsia, and (3) coordinating pro bono surgical interventions to treat birth-related complications like incontinence and fistula. While our work has traditionally been based in developing countries, we are now working in NYC to improve maternal health outcomes for women of color.

Our Work At Home In addition to our global efforts there is work to do right here at home. In New York City Black women are up to 8 times more likely than White women to suffer a pregnancyrelated death. To address this appalling disparity Saving Mothers has recently launched NYC mPOWHER Program a dualtrack educational program that empowers pregnant women of color with the necessary tools and information to challenge and surmount the racism they too often encounter within the healthcare system while we train their healthcare providers to listen more closely to their concerns so they can identify potential complications early on. Women in developing nations are 43 times more likely to die during childbirth.
