March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and while we celebrate all month long, our commitment to serving individuals with developmental disabilities never stops. This year’s theme, “We’re Here All Year,” reminds us that community and support should be championed every day—not just in March. Today, we’re excited to highlight Janice and her Direct Support Professional, Joe Ash. Joe supports Janice by not only providing personal care support but also serving as a bridge to help her build social connections and meaningful relationships. Janice has formed close friendships, gained confidence in expressing herself, and found joy in being part of her community. Here are some of the things that Janice finds joy in: 🎨 Janice loves: Arts & crafts at our Groveport center 🎤 She shines during: Karaoke at Monterey Care Center 🗣️ She uses her voice through: The ARC Industries Participant Advisory Council 💙 Her goal she's working on: Improving expressive communication—with Joe’s support, she’s making incredible progress! 🌟 Making Waves: Scott Smathers Wins Gold! 🏅🏅🏅 🌟 As we celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we’re excited to kick off the month by featuring some of our incredible participants and team members at ARC Industries—starting with Scott Smathers! By day, Scott is a dedicated member of our Group Employment team at Franklin County Children Services. But when he’s not working, he’s making a splash in the pool! 💦 At the Special Olympics Regional Swim Meet, Scott brought home THREE gold medals 🏆 in the backstroke, relay, and freestyle events. His hard work, determination, and years of training have truly paid off. Scott shared, "I am proud that I won. I worked hard to win. Mom sent me to all these swimming classes when I was little." His perseverance doesn’t go unnoticed, and ARC Industries Program Manager Brenda Whiting agrees: "Scott does not give up easily. Many will fall by the wayside, but Scott will keep on going." His mom, Karen, couldn't be prouder: "All the hard work he put into this, alongside my working night shifts and trying to get him to swimming lessons, has truly paid off." 💙 Now, Scott is setting sights on winning at the Special Olympics Ohio state-level swim meet that starts Friday March 7, 2025, at The Ohio State University - and we’ll be cheering him on every step of the way! 🙌💙 Join us in celebrating Scott’s achievements and the resilience of individuals with developmental disabilities who continue to break barriers every day!
