New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs

The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs (NJSFWC) is the largest volunteer women's service organization in New Jersey. It was founded in 1894 and is a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. As of now, it comprises approximately 8,000 members across 200 clubs throughout New Jersey.

History

The NJSFWC has a rich history of advocating for women's rights and contributing to various community projects. One of its notable achievements was leading the formation of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission to preserve The Palisades. In 1895, the Federation played a crucial role in protecting The Palisades by supporting the Interstate Park Commission's fundraising efforts, which ultimately halted the destruction of the area[2][5].

In 1918, the NJSFWC was instrumental in founding the New Jersey College for Women, now known as Douglass Residential College. This institution remains closely tied to the Federation, which offers scholarships to students there[1][2].

Community Impact

NJSFWC focuses on education, leadership training, and community service. Members participate in various local clubs to provide opportunities for personal growth and community engagement. Over the years, the organization has supported several special projects:

  • Special State Projects: These projects have included efforts such as the construction and maintenance of the Federation's headquarters, support for educational facilities for children with disabilities, and participation in national programs like the Statue of Liberty restoration[5].
  • Community Support: Since 2000, NJSFWC has supported local communities through projects like food banks, domestic violence awareness, and support for organizations helping individuals with autism and providing mental health services[5].

Awards and Recognition

  • Grassroots Organization of the Year: Awarded by the New Jersey Highlands Coalition in 2003 for its environmental conservation efforts[2].
  • Library Champions Award: Received in 2004 from the New Jersey Library Association for promoting literacy and library services[2].

Notable Figures

  • Mrs. L. Dow Balliett: Served as the Director of Music for the NJSFWC.
  • Ida Wharton Dawson: President of the NJSFWC during its early years[2].

The NJSFWC continues to play a vital role in shaping public interests and concerns into meaningful community projects, enhancing the quality of life in New Jersey through its volunteer work.
