Cultural Vistas
Cultural Vistas is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization based in the United States, with a mission to enrich minds, advance global skills, build careers, and connect lives through international exchange. Founded in 1963 as a result of a merger between the Association for International Practical Training (AIPT) and CDS International in 2011, the organization has grown to facilitate internships and professional exchange programs for individuals from around the world.
Mission and Programs
The organization's mission is to promote global understanding and collaboration among individuals and institutions through international exchange experiences. Cultural Vistas annually serves nearly 6,000 students, professionals, and emerging leaders through career-focused international internships, educational study tours, language immersion, and cultural exchange programs. It is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Visitor Program sponsor for the Intern, Trainee, and Teacher categories of the J-1 visa.
Cultural Vistas offers a variety of programs, including the Alfa Fellowship Program, Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program, Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange, Cultural Vistas Fellowship, Edmund S. Muskie Internship Program, International Visitor Leadership Program, IAESTE United States, Internships Abroad, Émigré Memorial German Internship Program–German State Parliaments (EMGIP), Korea WEST, and the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative.
History
Cultural Vistas was formed in 2011 following the merger of two established exchange organizations: AIPT and CDS International. AIPT was initiated in 1948 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) President Karl Compton and others to contribute to rebuilding post-war Europe through international exchange. CDS International originated from transatlantic work-study programs initiated by Carl Duisberg in the 1920s, officially establishing a non-profit society in New York City in 1968 to facilitate career training opportunities for Americans and Germans.
Values and Impact
Cultural Vistas prioritizes diversity and inclusion, fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are valued. The organization strives to dismantle barriers to access and inclusion, promoting equity in its programs. It emphasizes collaboration across borders and departments, recognizing the power of strong communities in solving global challenges. Cultural Vistas aims to design transformational experiences, deliver quality service, and build meaningful relationships for its participants and partners.
The organization employs a diverse staff and operates with a commitment to sustainability. Cultural Vistas has taken steps to reduce its environmental impact, aiming to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by at least 45% by 2030. It became a signatory of the Climate Action Network for International Education in 2024.
Partnerships and Funding
Cultural Vistas partners with diverse organizations, including U.S. and multinational companies, universities, and governments, to deliver exchange programs that drive positive change. The organization receives funding from public and private sources, supporting its mission to advance global understanding and collaboration.
Certification and Recognition
Cultural Vistas holds an ISO 27001 Information Security Certification, ensuring robust data protection, privacy, and security procedures. In 2024, it was designated as an "undesirable organization" by Russian authorities. Despite this, Cultural Vistas continues to promote international exchange and understanding, impacting communities globally through its programs.

CBYX participant David Byrne has been interning in Rep. Glenn Thompson’s office for the past six weeks as part of the Congressional Internship Program (CIP). Representative Thompson recently gave a brief speech on the House floor which was written by David, highlighting the CBYX program. The CIP provides five students participating in the longstanding U.S.-German exchange program, which is joint funded by the German Bundestag and U.S Department of State, with the opportunity to acquire real-world experience working in an office of a member of the U.S. Congress. It is an invaluable opportunity to acquire practical work experience at the level of the federal government, expand their knowledge of the responsibilities of a congressional member and legislative processes, while enhancing one’s analytical, communication, and research skills. The current international exchange program funding pause undermines U.S. national security and global influence. In the next six months, 17,500+ leaders from around the world are planning to come to the U.S. on short-term exchange programs. That is 17,500+ opportunities to make the U.S. safer and stronger on the world stage.
