Description

Newberry Library

The Newberry Library is a prominent privately endowed, independent research library located in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1887 through a bequest from the estate of Walter Loomis Newberry, an early Chicago pioneer involved in various commercial ventures. The library is free and open to the public, focusing on history and the humanities.

History

Walter L. Newberry died in 1868, but his will specified that a library be established if his children died without issue. After his daughters passed away and his widow, Julia, died in 1885, the Newberry estate's trustees implemented the library. The first librarian, William Frederick Poole, was instrumental in shaping the library's collection. Poole had previously been the first librarian of the Chicago Public Library. The library initially opened on La Salle Street but moved several times before settling into its permanent location on West Walton Street, where it has been since November 1893. The building was designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb in the Spanish-Romanesque style.

Collections and Focus

The Newberry Library specializes in the humanities, with core collections in American Indian and Indigenous Studies, American History and Culture, Chicago and the Midwest, Genealogy and Local History, History of the Book, Manuscripts and Archives, Maps, Travel, and Exploration, Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern World, Music and Dance, and Religion. Its extensive collections include more than 1.5 million books, 5 million manuscript pages, and 500,000 historic maps. Over 10,000 items have been digitized for remote access.

Programs and Activities

The Newberry offers a variety of programs and events, including exhibitions, seminars, lectures, performances, and classes. It also provides resources for family history research, supports academic and public engagement through fellowships and public programs, and fosters a community of learning with diverse audiences.

Mission and Strategic Plans

The Newberry Library aims to inspire research and learning in the humanities, encourage conversations about important ideas, and promote a deeper understanding of the world through its vast and accessible collection of rare and historical materials. Its strategic plan emphasizes advancing knowledge, building diverse communities of learning, preserving and increasing access to the collection, and strengthening institutional health.

EIN and Tax Status

The Newberry Library operates under the EIN 36-2167814 as a nonprofit organization.
