Overview
The Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Foundation, Inc. is an American nonprofit organization of volunteer women dedicated to promoting U.S. competitiveness by supporting academically outstanding U.S. citizens pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and health disciplines. Headquartered in the United States, ARCS focuses on funding graduate students at leading research universities, thereby contributing to the advancement of science and technology.
History
ARCS Foundation was founded in 1958 by a group of visionary women in Los Angeles, led by Florence Malouf. Their mission was to enhance scientific leadership and competitiveness in the U.S. Initially focused on the space program, the organization grew nationally, establishing chapters across the country. The chapters engage in fundraising and support scholars from prominent universities in their respective regions.
Mission and Activities
The primary goal of ARCS Foundation is to advance science and technology by providing financial awards to graduate students. Since its inception, ARCS has granted over $136 million to more than 11,000 scholars. These scholars have gone on to achieve significant milestones, including publishing thousands of research papers, securing substantial grant funding, starting science-related businesses, and mentoring young scientists.
ARCS Foundation supports research in over 42 areas, ranging from agriculture to zoology, reflecting its commitment to diverse scientific disciplines. The organization's awards are targeted at Ph.D. students in programs such as engineering, biological sciences, and medicine, among others.
Chapters and Funding
ARCS operates through a network of chapters across the U.S., each supporting students at local universities. The funding provided by ARCS can vary depending on the chapter's resources and specific award structures. For instance, some chapters may offer annual stipends, while others provide support for specific academic durations.
Notable Alumni
Notable ARCS alumni include leaders in scientific innovation and education. Since 2015, ARCS has inducted distinguished scholars into the ARCS Alumni Hall of Fame for their contributions in areas such as scientific discovery, peer recognition, mentoring, and leadership.
Impact
ARCS Foundation has made a significant impact on U.S. scientific competitiveness by fostering a pool of talented researchers and innovators. Nine out of ten ARCS Scholars pursue careers in their chosen fields after graduation, contributing to the nation's scientific advancements.
Membership and Operations
ARCS Foundation is supported by over 1,160 volunteer members across its 15 chapters. One hundred percent of contributions received are dedicated to funding scholars, reflecting the organization's commitment to efficiently utilizing resources for the advancement of science and technology.
