The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System is a governing body responsible for overseeing the University of Wisconsin System. This board consists of 18 members, with 16 appointed by the Governor of Wisconsin, subject to Senate confirmation, and two ex officio members[1][2].
Membership and Roles
- Appointed Members: Fourteen of the appointed members serve seven-year terms, while two student representatives, including one non-traditional student, serve two-year terms[1][2].
- Ex Officio Members: The ex officio members include the state superintendent of public instruction and the president or a designated representative of the Wisconsin Technical College System Board[1].
Responsibilities
The Board is responsible for:
- Policy and Governance: Establishing policies and rules for the university system.
- Economic Planning: Planning for future state needs in collegiate education.
- Academic Standards: Setting admission standards and policies.
- Budgetary Oversight: Reviewing and approving university budgets.
- Regulatory Framework: Establishing the regulatory context for operation of individual university units.
- Executive Appointments: Appointing the President of the University of Wisconsin System, chancellors for each university, and granting tenure appointments to faculty members[1][3].
Meetings and Leadership
Regular meetings are held eight times annually, with special meetings as needed. Leadership roles, including the President, Vice President, and Executive Director, are elected during the annual meeting[1].
