Chinese American Citizens Alliance
Overview
The Chinese American Citizens Alliance (C.A.C.A.) is a United States-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the empowerment and advocacy of Chinese Americans. Founded in its current form in 1915, it evolved from the Native Sons of the Golden State, established in 1895 as a fraternal organization for American-born Chinese men.
Mission and Objectives
The mission of C.A.C.A. is to promote strong ethics, values, and community among Chinese Americans by defending their rights as U.S. citizens, fostering patriotism, preserving cultural heritage, and educating future leaders. Key objectives include empowering Chinese Americans to pursue the highest ethics and values, defending American citizenship, improving economic and political opportunities, preserving historical and cultural traditions, and ensuring education for youth.
History
C.A.C.A. was formed to combat prejudice and promote assimilation within the Chinese American community. Initially focusing on advocacy for American-born Chinese rights, it expanded nationally, adding lodges across the U.S. and admitting women as members from 1977. Notable achievements include lobbying against discriminatory laws, such as the Immigration Act of 1924, and advocating for non-quota status for Chinese wives of American citizens, which was successfully passed in 1946.
Activities and Achievements
The organization has played a significant role in various social issues, including voting rights, school segregation, and discriminatory housing practices. C.A.C.A. also promoted cultural exchange by publishing The Chinese Times, a prominent Chinese-language newspaper in the U.S. until its closure in 1988. In recent years, the organization successfully lobbied for the Chinese American World War II Veterans Congressional Gold Medal Act, recognizing over 20,000 Chinese American veterans.
Structure and Membership
Today, C.A.C.A. operates with 18 active lodges nationwide. Membership is open not only to Chinese Americans but also to non-Chinese individuals who support the organization's goals. Key leadership positions have included female National Grand Presidents, starting with Nancy Ann Gee in 1997, followed by Carolyn Hong Chan in 2007.
Community Engagement
C.A.C.A. continues to engage in community projects, especially in areas like San Francisco's Chinatown, supporting initiatives such as housing projects, community centers, and health services. The organization fosters intergenerational dialogue and supports the education and leadership development of young Chinese Americans, aiming to ensure they are proud and active members of their community.
