When Colton was a toddler, he began having dizzy spells and falling over. After a more serious injury from a fall at preschool, his parents brought him to their local emergency room with concussion-like symptoms. Colton’s scans were reviewed by specialists at Lurie Children’s and his family was met with the unexpected: he had Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a genetic condition that can lead to benign tumors throughout the body. Shortly afterward, Jackie and her husband confirmed they were carriers of the gene, and their one-year-old daughter, Riley, was also diagnosed with TSC. Even though the siblings share the same diagnosis, their journeys have looked very different. Colton was diagnosed with two brain tumors and has undergone treatment over the years to shrink and stabilize them. Riley was diagnosed with cardiac rhabdomyoma, a type of benign heart tumor in children. Both are thriving under the care of Lurie Children’s multidisciplinary TSC Clinic. Today, there is no known cure for TSC, but several treatments help patients live long and fulfilling lives. Jackie is a volunteer leader for the TSC Alliance and volunteers at the Lurie Children’s TSC Clinic to advocate for research and support other families navigating the diagnosis. Colton is an expert chess player who loves esports—he dreams of becoming a video game developer and is preparing for his transition to middle school. Riley is a spunky, competitive dancer who lights up every room and makes friends wherever she goes. Together, the siblings are conquering TSC and have much to look forward to, including celebrating their upcoming birthdays together.
