The Birmingham Regional Empowerment and Development Center, commonly referred to as BREAD, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational and empowerment programs for students and their families. Incorporated in December 2003, BREAD was originally known as Bethel Community Learning Center, Inc. before adopting its current name.

Mission and Vision

BREAD's mission is to equip and empower participants for success by fostering courage, confidence, and character. The organization focuses on creating educational opportunities and programs that support the development and preservation of individuals within the community.

Programs and Services

STEPS Program

BREAD operates the STEPS program, which stands for Striving To Equip and Prepare Students. This initiative partners with local schools to offer after-school and summer enrichment programs for students from Pre-K through Eighth grade. As of recent reports, STEPS collaborates with seven schools in the surrounding area, benefiting over 125 students.

STAGES Program

In addition to its youth-focused programs, BREAD provides an Adult Education program called STAGES, an acronym for Strengthening & Training Adults for Growth, Empowerment & Success. STAGES focuses on GED preparation courses, job readiness training, and life skills classes.

Awards and Recognition

BREAD has been recognized for its excellence in programming. The organization was awarded the Excellence in Extended Day Programming Award by the State of Alabama Department of Education, acknowledging its role as a model program for after-school and community-based organizations in training staff to deliver quality enrichment programs.

BREAD has received notable grants, including being a recipient of a Kresge Arts In Birmingham grant in 2011. These grants have supported its efforts to expand educational opportunities and empower the community.

Overall, the Birmingham Regional Empowerment and Development Center plays a significant role in enhancing the educational and personal development of both children and adults within the Birmingham region.
