Description

Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association

The Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association (OPCMIA) is a trade union that represents plasterers and cement masons in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1864, the organization traces its roots to the era of the American Civil War, when it began as an attempt to unify local craft unions representing workers in the plastering trade.

History

In 1882, following a strike in Cincinnati, Ohio, several locals met in St. Louis, Missouri, to reestablish a national organization for plasterers. Over time, the union expanded to include cement workers, officially becoming the Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association.

In 1887, the organization welcomed Canadian members, marking a significant expansion into international membership. By 1914, it was renamed to reflect its inclusion of both plasterers and cement finishers. In the mid-20th century, the organization worked with other construction groups to establish national standards for apprentice training.

Mission and Activities

OPCMIA focuses on protecting and promoting the quality of the plastering and cement masonry industries, while also supporting the livelihoods of its members. The union is involved in various activities, including:

  • Apprentice Training: OPCMIA has a well-structured apprenticeship program designed to ensure that members are trained to the highest standards, providing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the trade.
  • Industry Advocacy: The union plays a crucial role in advocating for better working conditions and wages for its members, liaising with government agencies and other construction unions.
  • Safety Initiatives: While safety is a broader construction industry initiative, OPCMIA members often participate in and benefit from enhanced safety protocols and training programs.

Affiliations

OPCMIA is affiliated with the AFL-CIO and the Canadian Labour Congress, two prominent labor organizations that advocate for workers' rights and better working conditions across North America.

Membership

As of 2018, the union reported having approximately 43,739 members. Local chapters, such as OPCMIA Local 18 (with EIN 37-1355734), work under the parent organization, focusing on regional issues and member support.

Leadership

The leadership of the union has evolved over the years, with notable past presidents including Daniel Stepano, who assumed the position in 2016. The organization's leadership structure supports its mission by overseeing national initiatives and ensuring the union remains a strong advocate for its members.
