CCII's goal is to promote international climate for peace and human development. CCII's "tool" is sponsorship of projects that bring together people to exchange information, ideas and friendship.

It was started in the mid1980s as an outgrowth of the Charles F. Kettering Foundation a major philanthropic foundation. Crosscurrents is now completely independent of the Kettering Foundation.
