PTA North Carolina Congress
The PTA North Carolina Congress, also known as the North Carolina PTA (NCPTA), is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for the education, health, safety, and success of children and youth in North Carolina. As the oldest and largest volunteer organization in the state, it plays a crucial role in building strong families and communities.
History
NCPTA was organized on November 4, 1919, at the First Baptist Church in Charlotte. The first state president was Mrs. Joseph Garibaldi. In 1927, the North Carolina Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers was established at Shaw University in Raleigh. The two organizations united on April 22, 1969, consolidating their efforts to support children across the state.
Activities and Advocacy
Throughout its history, NCPTA has been involved in numerous initiatives and advocacy efforts. These include promoting kindergartens in public schools, sponsoring parenting conferences, establishing student loan funds, and advocating for health education. In recent years, NCPTA has focused on increasing funding for education, supporting initiatives like school health programs, and engaging in advocacy related to education policy and family engagement. The organization has also been successful in advocacy efforts, such as maintaining funding for elementary school teacher assistants and driver education programs.
Structure and Mission
NCPTA operates as a 501(c)(3) organization with a strong commitment to its mission. It emphasizes leadership development, sound financial practices, and member engagement. NCPTA collaborates closely with local units and councils to ensure that the needs of every child are met.
Programs and Events
NCPTA hosts various conferences, workshops, and events to support its advocacy goals. These include leadership trainings, grant writing sessions, and advocacy days at the state legislature. The organization also supports local PTAs in achieving excellence through programs like the National PTA Healthy Lifestyles grants and the School Excellence Program. NCPTA remains affiliated with the National PTA, adhering to its requirements for continued association.
External Support
NCPTA receives funding and support from various sources to enhance its initiatives. For instance, it has received grants to expand its parent involvement in school health initiatives across multiple counties in North Carolina.
Leadership Recruitment
The organization actively seeks advocates with diverse expertise to join its working board, including those from rural counties and specialists in areas such as LGBTQIA+ issues, multilingual learners, school nutrition, and school safety.
