West Austin Neighborhood Group
The West Austin Neighborhood Group (WANG) is a non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas. Established with the shared goal of preserving West Austin and protecting it from deterioration, WANG focuses on community development, ecology, safety, and other matters affecting the quality and character of the neighborhood and the City of Austin.
Objectives and Activities
- Community Development: WANG engages in initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents by promoting community involvement and advocating for policies that align with the neighborhood's interests.
- Ecological Preservation: The group actively works on preserving green spaces and addressing environmental concerns within the community.
- Safety and Community Engagement: WANG encourages neighborhood safety through various community-driven activities and supports efforts to maintain a healthy community environment.
Key Initiatives
- Proposed Development and Zoning Changes: WANG is involved in advocating for responsible growth and development in the neighborhood. The group closely monitors proposed zoning changes and land development plans to ensure they align with the community's vision and neighborhood plans.
- Rejection of the Proposed Watershed Plan at Reed Park: WANG has actively petitioned against the City of Austin's proposal to convert Reed Park's ballfield into a water retention pond, arguing that such changes would harm the park's green space and historical preservation.
- Response to the "HOME" Ordinance: WANG has expressed concerns over the "HOME" ordinance passed by the Austin City Council, which allows multiple units on single-family zoned lots. The organization advocates for amendments that promote smaller, more sustainable housing solutions while preserving the neighborhood's character.
Governance and Meetings
WANG holds regular board meetings, typically at the Howson Library, where members discuss community issues, plan initiatives, and make decisions on neighborhood matters. The organization also invites community participation in its annual meetings and special events.
Non-profit Status
The West Austin Neighborhood Group is recognized as a tax-exempt non-profit organization, having been granted this status in March 2017. The organization's activities are guided by its commitment to the well-being and preservation of the West Austin neighborhood.
