Honoring Gold Star Spouses On Gold Star Spouses Day, we recognize the strength of military spouses like Samantha Tjaden. In 2007, she lost her husband, Army 1LT Gwilym Newman, who was killed in action in Iraq. As a young wife and mother, she endured incredible loss—but her resilience and determination carried her forward. Samantha earned her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice and is now a faculty member in the Criminology Department at Missouri State University, dedicating her career to education and justice. Her son, Gwilym Newman, is an NGS Scholar, and we are proud to support his education in honor of his father’s legacy. Gold Star Spouses like Samantha remind us that the sacrifices of our fallen heroes extend beyond the battlefield.
