Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (ΑΚΑ) is the first intercollegiate historically African-American sorority, founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle and eight other collegiate women. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women.
History
Founding
The idea for Alpha Kappa Alpha began in 1907 when Ethel Hedgemon Lyle sought to create a sisterhood at Howard University, inspired by her observations of sorority life during a visit to Brown University. After gaining approval from the university administration in November 1907, the first official meetings took place in Miner Hall on January 15, 1908. By February 1908, additional members were invited, and the sorority continued to grow, initiating its first formal members on February 11, 1909.
Incorporation and Growth
Alpha Kappa Alpha became the first African-American sorority to incorporate nationally on January 29, 1913, led by Nellie Quander. This incorporation allowed the organization to expand its operations through subordinate chapters and expand its service offerings. By 1921, AKA had established its first ten undergraduate chapters.
