Northern California Islamic Council
The Northern California Islamic Council (NCIC) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Northern California. It was established to serve as a network for coordination and cooperation among Islamic centers and Muslim nonprofit organizations in the region. The organization aims to provide a united voice for the Muslim community, fostering dialogue and enhancing civic engagement.
Mission and Objectives
NCIC seeks to unify the diverse American Muslim community in Northern California for the greater good. In an environment of rising Islamophobia, it aims to consolidate strengths and stand firmly for peace and dignity. The organization promotes joint efforts among its member institutions, including mosques and Islamic centers, to address societal issues and advocate for the interests of the Muslim community.
Advocacy and Campaigns
NCIC is involved in various advocacy efforts, particularly concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It supports humanitarian aid for residents of the Gaza Strip and opposes U.S. military aid to Israel, criticizing what it views as atrocities and human rights abuses in Palestinian territories. The organization has collaborated with other groups on campaigns to raise awareness about these issues, sometimes using billboards and public demonstrations to convey its messages.
Community Engagement
Beyond its advocacy roles, NCIC encourages community involvement in civic activities. It has expressed solidarity with movements addressing race issues, such as those following the death of George Floyd, by highlighting concerns about systemic racism and police violence.
Financial Operations
NCIC operates primarily on contributions, with no reported program services or other revenue sources as of recent financial filings. The organization has relatively modest assets and no liabilities.
Leadership
Dr. Hatem Bazian serves as the current chair of NCIC, guiding the organization's strategic initiatives and community engagement efforts.
Legal Status
NCIC is classified under the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) as an Islamic organization (X40). Its nonprofit status allows donations to be tax-deductible.
