Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives made a budget decision that will increase food insecurity and health disparities dramatically in the Carolinas. This bill cuts $300 billion in SNAP and $880 billion in Medicaid funding. Families, seniors, veterans, and children in our community work hard every day to build better lives—but they need a strong foundation to succeed. Access to food and healthcare is that foundation. Cutting these programs does not reduce need but makes recovery harder. So, how will this impact our children, families, disabled, and seniors in the Carolinas? In NC, this threatens the support that helps 1.4 million people, including 648,000 children and 226,000 seniors, put food on the table. In SC, this threatens the support that helps 581,600 people, including 268,000 children and 92,000 seniors, put food on the table. Our food banks, while incredibly effective, cannot replace the scale of these federal programs. Hunger is a solvable problem. After nearly seven impactful years, Mike Darrow has stepped down as Executive Director of Feeding the Carolinas. Throughout his tenure, Mike guided our organization through historic hurricanes and a global pandemic, championed our advocacy initiatives, and fostered meaningful relationships both within our team and throughout the community. He cultivated a spirit of camaraderie among staff and consistently invested in our growth and development. Mike’s passion for Feeding the Carolinas' mission has left an indelible mark on our organization.
