Methacton students from grades 8-12 participated in Recruitment Day yesterday, hosted at Station 53 by Lower Providence Fire Department and WVFD. The purpose of this event is to educate students on the roles of their local volunteer fire departments, and promote the need for volunteers. Students learned a wide range of skills and got an overview of equipment firefighters use on a regular basis. Both departments offer junior firefighter programs starting at age 14. Methacton parents interested in learning more should contact their township fire department (either Lower Providence or Worcester) to learn more about the opportunities for your student. Methacton students that volunteer with their local fire departments can receive high school course credits in exchange for their service hours. That is just one of the many benefits students can take advantage of by participating in these programs. All junior firefighter activities are regulated by strict child labor laws and under direct supervision. Junior freighters are limited in what they can do on scenes until they are 18 and receive their state certifications.
