Marol Academy is a community primary and secondary school in Gogrial East County, Warrap State, Sout We are committed to starting and sustaining rural schools offering an accessible and safe environment for educating girls, as well as boys, in the newest country, Republic of South Sudan. Our board of directors agrees that to build a nation, both girls and boys must be equally educated. Assigning pupils to classes based on performance through testing is a significant goal. Three important emphases of the school, along with academic achievement are: 1) HIV/AIDS and public health awareness, 2) peaceable conflict resolution, 3) ecological and sustainable environments training. Due to civil war for more than two decades, when the school opened in 2008 in rural Warrap State, there had been no schools accessible for boys or girls; sporadic studies conducted by relief organizations in pre-independent southern Sudan and in refugee camps, found mass illiteracy, a tragic decline from advances made before the war. Statistics on female literacy was the lowest, less than two percent. A female was more likely to die giving birth than to be able to read. When the Marol Primary School opened in May 2008, 330 youth enrolled. This in a rural village of only 200 residents, with no electrification, no clean water, no roads in or out. There now is a bore hole and hand pump providing clean ground water, thanks to UNICEF's donation of the handpump, CESVI, an Italian engineering firm's donation of an engineer, and The Marol Academy providing a grant covering the costs of labor. Today, the school has 650 pupils, with those completing Grade 8 achieving top marks in the State on their Exit Exams, indicating the earnest endeavors of pupils and high commitment of Marol Primary School teachers.
