Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of New York
Overview
The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of New York is a fraternal and charitable organization that serves as the governing body for Freemasonry in New York State. Founded in 1782, it is one of the oldest and largest independent Masonic organizations in the United States.
History
The history of Freemasonry in New York dates back to the mid-1730s when Daniel Coxe Jr. was appointed as the Provincial Grand Master for New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania by the Grand Master of the Premier Grand Lodge of England. However, no records exist of his tenure, making it unclear if he exercised any authority in Masonic affairs[1][2]. Over the years, additional Provincial Grand Masters were appointed, including Sir John Johnson, who supported the British during the American Revolution and is believed to have taken his warrant with him when he fled to Canada[1].
Prior to its formal organization, the Grand Lodge of New York was influenced by both the Moderns and Ancients Grand Lodges of England. The current Grand Lodge was officially established under a warrant from the Antient Grand Lodge of England, issued on September 5, 1781, and organized on December 15, 1782[1][2]. It declared its independence on June 6, 1787, assuming the title "Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York"[1][2].
Notable Figures
The early leadership of the Grand Lodge included prominent figures such as Robert R. Livingston, who served as Grand Master from 1784 to 1800. Livingston was also involved in the inauguration of George Washington as the first President of the United States, using a Bible that remains significant in Masonic ceremonies[2].
The Grand Lodge has played a significant role in American history, with many notable New Yorkers contributing to Masonic life, including past Presidents and prominent political figures like Theodore Roosevelt[4].
Philanthropy and Activities
The Grand Lodge is involved in numerous philanthropic endeavors, supporting Masonic care communities and contributing to the welfare of both Masons and the broader community. It has historical ties to various educational and charitable institutions[1][4].
Buildings and Infrastructure
Historically, the Grand Lodge has had several headquarters, including a Gothic-style Masonic Hall built in 1826 in Manhattan and a Second French Empire-style building constructed in the 1870s. The current Grand Lodge building, located at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue, was completed in 1909 and serves as a central hub for Masonic activities[1].
Relationships with Other Organizations
The Grand Lodge of New York has mutual recognition with the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New York, established in 2001, promoting unity and collaboration within the Masonic community[1].
Grand Masters
The leadership of the Grand Lodge has been guided by various Grand Masters over the years, contributing to its growth and influence. The current Grand Master is Steven Adam Rubin[1].
