We provide the facility and means to collect, preserve and share information regarding the heritage of the County and surrounding region, and encourage interest in historical and genealogical research, and in preservation of local historic properties, sites, and artifacts.Our vision is to be an educational resource and community leader committed to collecting, preserving and sharing the records of people, places and events, so that future generations may find common interest and knowledge in the unique heritage of our County and surrounding region.

Since its establishment in 1936 the Society has grown from a modest collection housed in founders homes into one of Virginias premier small historical and genealogical research facilities. This reputation has been earned through the depth and breadth of the Societys holdings. Our reference library contains over 7000 volumes complemented by searchable databases with over one million indexed records available on our website and more than 200000 digitized historical photographs and documents.
