Manada Conservancy
Manada Conservancy is a nonprofit land trust organization dedicated to preserving the natural, historic, agricultural, and scenic resources of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Established in 1997, the organization aims to achieve its mission through land conservation, environmental education, and community engagement.
History and Mission
The name "Manada" derives from the Manada Creek watershed, which was central to the Conservancy's original focus area in southern Dauphin County. It also reflects the Native American history of the region and the interconnectedness of water and land.
Manada Conservancy envisions a community where preserved land is abundant and conservation is widely practiced for the benefit of all. This vision is rooted in concerns over the loss of farmland and wildlife habitat in the region, which motivated the founding members to establish the organization.
Conservation Efforts
Manada Conservancy protects land by working with landowners who voluntarily wish to preserve their properties. One key strategy is the use of conservation easements, which are restrictions placed on parcels of land to protect their conservation value in perpetuity. These easements limit development and activities in sensitive areas, ensuring that the land remains undeveloped for purposes such as agriculture, wildlife habitat, or scenic preservation.
As of recent data, Manada Conservancy has conserved nearly 3,000 acres across Dauphin County, with over 2,100 acres under easement and over 200 acres owned by the organization.
Funding
Manada Conservancy is primarily funded through community support, with more than 70% of its revenue coming from membership and individual donations. The organization also hosts fundraising events, including an annual native plant sale, and accepts contributions from various other sources, including non-member donations, grants, bequests, and corporate sponsorships.
Educational Programs and Community Engagement
Manada Conservancy offers free education programs that draw participants from a multi-county area. These programs focus on environmental education and community engagement, fostering awareness and appreciation for natural and historic resources.
The organization is a member of the Land Trust Alliance and WeConservePA, collaborating with these networks to enhance land conservation practices and advocate for policies supporting conservation efforts in Pennsylvania.
Tax Status
Manada Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, which allows donors to claim their contributions as tax deductions. This status enables the organization to receive various forms of charitable giving, including stock donations and vehicle donations.
