Join us for a Birding 101 Series on Saturday, June 7th and June 14th from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Kirby Nature Center. Birding 101: At Home and Afield, is a two part program geared towards introducing people to the joys of birdwatching. Session one will be held on June 7th and session two on June 14th, 2025. Both sessions will be held at Kirby Nature Center and will begin at 9:00 a.m. promptly. Please arrive by 8:45 a.m. to register. If you have binoculars, please bring them with you. A limited number of loaner binoculars will be available for use. Part 1, “Birding From Home,” will focus on the birds you can see in and around your neighborhood, and will also cover essentials like binoculars and field guides. We will be indoors for this part of the program. Part 2, “Birding Afield,” we will travel outdoors to expand on what we have learned in the first session and will feature a field trip to put our skills to work. We will have the option of traveling with Kathi Hutton to Shawnee State Park to put your new skills to the test. Or, you can choose to stay at Kirby Nature Center and walk some of the easier paths around the center to test your field skills as well. Either way, we will have experienced leaders to guide you and answer questions. We recommend you wear sturdy shoes for the field trip, and bring water with you. Kathi Hutton will be developing and presenting this program. Kathi is an experienced birder and an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist (OCVN). She regularly leads bird and nature walks and enjoys sharing her knowledge about the natural world with beginners. Kathy McDonald, an OCVN from the Midwest Native Plant Society, Inc., will talk briefly about the importance of native plants for birds. CEU’s are available for attending each session for OCVN’s. If you belong to an organization that gives credit for education, please contact them for details and let us know. A few days before the event, we will send you an email with more information. Questions can be directed to midwestnativeplants@gmail.com. This event is sponsored by Midwest Native Plant Society, Inc. and Wild Birds Unlimited. (fb)
