Description

Warren Library Association

The Warren Library Association is a nonprofit organization that serves as the foundation for the Warren Public Library in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1873 as a free public library under the Laws of Pennsylvania, it celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023.

History

Established 150 years ago, the Warren Library Association began its journey to provide library services to the community. In 1882, Thomas Struthers contributed generously to establish the library in the Struthers Library Theatre building. This location served the citizens of Warren for 33 years, with the theater acting as a financial support mechanism for the library.

In 1916, the library relocated to its current site at its present location. By 1962, the Warren Library Association had been designated as the district library center for 17 public libraries across five counties in northwestern Pennsylvania. It was also appointed as the county library for Warren County.

Governance

The Warren Library Association is governed by a 12-person Board of Directors, appointed by the County Commissioners, the City of Warren, and representatives elected from the Association. This governance structure ensures comprehensive oversight and strategic planning for the library's activities.

Programs and Services

The Warren Library offers an array of programs and services for patrons of all ages. These include:

  • Access to Materials: Patrons have access to books, audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, e-books, and e-audiobooks. The library also participates in interlibrary loan programs, enhancing resource availability.
  • Digital Resources: Participation in the PA POWER Library program provides full-text electronic access to magazines and newspapers.
  • Community Programs: The library sponsors a variety of programs for different age groups and offers public meeting room space for individuals and groups.
  • Reference and Local History: A comprehensive collection of historic Warren County photographs and newspapers is maintained in the Reference Department, complemented by a climate-controlled Pennsylvania History Room.

Community Involvement

The library is supported by an active Friends of the Library group, which engages in fundraising and volunteer efforts to enhance the library's service capabilities.

Overall, the Warren Library Association plays a vital role in providing educational, informational, and recreational resources to the community, fostering lifelong learning and cultural enrichment.
