St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Community

St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Community is a nonprofit religious organization located in Waupaca, Wisconsin. The parish has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century when Waupaca ceased to be a mission church in 1902, with the Rev. A. B. Billion becoming its first resident pastor that same year[5].

History

The community has grown significantly since its inception. Initially, the parish used a former church site in downtown Waupaca, but it outgrew these facilities. Therefore, a new church was dedicated on May 28, 2003, by Bishop Robert Banks. This modern facility is situated on Shadow Road, featuring extensive natural grounds and notable artworks, including stained glass and woodcarvings by Michael R. Kapitan[4].

The old church site was vacated in 2003 and remained unused for over 15 years. In 2018, the city of Waupaca acquired this former site with plans for redevelopment, hoping to revitalize the area as part of downtown Waupaca's redevelopment plans[1].

Mission and Activities

St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Community focuses on spreading the Good News through word and action. The organization strives to welcome, pray, teach, share, and heal, embodying Christ's teachings in the local community. The current facility is known for its spacious sanctuary and beautiful artwork[2].

Community Engagement

The parish engages in various activities centered around faith, education, and community service. The contemporary sanctuary and grounds provide a peaceful setting for religious gatherings and events, contributing to the spiritual well-being of the Waupaca community.

Current Status

While the old downtown site has been sold for redevelopment, the new church on Shadow Road continues to serve as the center for St. Mary Magdalene's community activities. The organization remains committed to its mission, fostering a sense of unity and purpose among its members and the broader Waupaca community.
